Dr Taranjit Singh, Consultant Palliative Care Physician & Chief Medical Officer, Ganga Prem Hospice, shares his thoughts ahead of hosting an amazing team of Rama Foundation volunteers going to India in August 2025.
Every year, when Rama Foundation UK volunteers visit Ganga Prem Hospice in Rishikesh, it’s a bright moment for patients, families, and staff. For over more then ten years, this UK based charity has worked with the Ganga Prem hospice, located along the peaceful Ganga River, to provide caring, all-around support for people with terminal cancer. The volunteers—nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, dietitians, and speech therapists from places like Cambridge University Hospitals—share their expertise and make a big impact. In 2023, they ran training session for nursing staff, workshops showing caregivers how to help patients with head, neck, stomach, or breast cancers move more comfortably and eat better. These tips made life easier for patients, especially those who struggle to move or have special dietary needs, helping them feel more respected and cared for.
This time, the hospice team is looking forward to more training, especially in nursing skills and leadership skills, specialized nutrition for advanced cancer patients, and managing tough symptoms during EOLC They’re also excited to learn the latest evidence-based practices used in Western healthcare, which will help physican, nurses, dietitians, and other hospice workers provide even better care. Beyond skills, the volunteers bring warmth and a listening ear, making patients and families feel connected and part of a larger community. The Rama Foundation also helps out with practical things like nutritional supplements, laptops for the hospice, and programs to teach staff the latest methods in healthcare. These efforts ensure that care reaches people in need, especially in communities with limited resources.
This visit is more than just a partnership—it’s a shared effort to heal and grow together. The volunteers combine their knowledge with genuine kindness, creating something truly special. Ganga Prem Hospice and the Rama Foundation show how people from different parts of the world can come together to bring comfort and dignity to those facing hard times.
